August Crypto Exploits Surge to 50 Incidents as Total Losses Drop to $136M
August logged 50 separate security incidents across crypto protocols, marking the highest monthly breach count of the year. Despite the spike in frequency, total losses fell 49.5% to $136.3 million as rapid interventions limited attacker hauls. The shift reveals attackers casting a wider net for smaller individual payouts.
August set a fresh monthly high for security breaches across the market, with 50 distinct incidents recorded across multiple chains. Yet despite the rising volume of attacks, total capital drained fell 49.5% month-over-month to $136.3 million. Attackers are striking far more frequently, but protocol defenses are holding individual losses down.
A single breach dominated the monthly stats when lending venue Tectonic was hit for $74 million on Cronos. Active validator intervention quickly froze network state to lock up the bulk of the funds before they could be bridged out to Bitcoin, dramatically blunting the final fallout.
Average losses per incident dropped to $2.7 million, down sharply from $9 million in July. Secondary hits on Moonwell, Term Labs, and Coinsbuy rounded out the monthly tally as capital shifts toward protocols with faster emergency response mechanisms.
