Bitcoin Reclaims $84K as Massive Squeeze Flushes $262 Million in Hourly Shorts

Bitcoin surged past $84,000 to reach an eight-month high, triggering a rapid liquidation cascade that wiped out $262 million in short positions in one hour. The rally follows Bitcoin's first weekly close above its 50-week moving average in 45 weeks, signaling structural market relief. With derivative leverage forcibly cleared, spot market demand will dictate whether this breakout consolidates into a lasting regime shift.

Bitcoin crossed $84,000 for the first time since January, triggering a rapid cascade that forcibly liquidated $262 million in short positions in just one hour. Total market liquidations topped $599 million over 24 hours, overwhelmingly punishing bearish leverage as over 127,000 traders were caught off guard.

The immediate mechanical driver was a severe short squeeze, led by an $11.29 million liquidation on a Binance Bitcoin perpetual contract. Beyond the sudden leverage flush, the structural backdrop shifted when Bitcoin locked in its first weekly close above the 50-week moving average in 45 weeks, ending near $81,159.

This technical reclaiming of long-term trend lines often signals a structural floor in market cycles. Altcoins joined the broader relief, with major assets following suit as capital flows spilled into high-beta plays across the ecosystem.

However, derivative-driven pumps require sustained spot buying to prevent a pullback. If buyers fail to defend key support levels above the 50-week average, open interest could quickly rebuild on the short side, leaving late long positions exposed to volatility.
