BitMEX Sunsets Original Perpetual Swap as Wall Street Adopts Crypto Market Design

BitMEX has settled its historic XBTUSD contract and scheduled a full platform shutdown for September 23, closing the venue that created the perpetual swap. While the pioneer exits, the perpetual contract design it invented now commands over 75 percent of crypto trading volume and is actively migrating into regulated traditional finance equity venues. Market structure is permanently transformed even as original liquidity consolidates onto major institutional platforms.

BitMEX settling XBTUSD and shuttering operations on September 23 marks a historic transition in crypto derivatives. Launched in May 2016, the contract solved liquidity fragmentation by eliminating expiry dates and maintaining price parity through automated funding rates. That mechanical tweak unlocked continuous 24/7 liquidity and laid the blueprint for modern leverage markets.

The legacy of the original perpetual swap far outstrips the exchange that built it. Perpetual contracts now command over 75 percent of global crypto volume, and traditional finance is rapidly adopting the format. Kalshi has filed with US regulators to launch stock index perpetuals, while Kraken aims to bring perpetual derivatives to American investors through regulated channels.

BitMEX leaves behind a structural legacy even as trading activity consolidates onto larger venues like Binance. The venue itself may sunset, but the perpetual contract design has evolved from an experimental instrument into the backbone of institutional financial architecture.
