Bitwise Spot ETF Launch Clouded as NEAR Intents Suffers $3.8M Cross-Chain Exploit

NEAR Intents suffered a $3.8 million cross-chain exploit just two days after Bitwise launched its spot NEAR ETF. While the underlying layer-one blockchain was not breached and full user reimbursement is promised, the security slip hits short-term market momentum. The resulting price drop reflects temporary app-layer anxiety rather than fundamental protocol failure.

A logic bug in the Omni deposit and withdrawal contract allowed attackers to drain $3.8 million from the NEAR Intents BNB Chain hot wallet before funds were routed to KuCoin and converted into Bitcoin. The application-layer breach forced a temporary pause across 11 connected chains, delivering a sharp jolt to ecosystem confidence.

The timing creates maximum narrative friction, striking just two days after Bitwise debuted the first US spot NEAR ETF. Bitwise had explicitly highlighted NEAR Intents and its thirty-two billion dollars in processed volume as a key adoption metric. The resulting eight point six percent token drop highlights how quickly leveraged September gains unwound on the news.

Traders should distinguish protocol-level vulnerability from middleware failure. The NEAR layer-one consensus remained untouched throughout the incident, and team-backed reimbursement mitigates permanent capital destruction. Once cross-chain bridges reopen without secondary flaws, market focus should shift back to ETF-driven institutional flows rather than localized smart contract bugs.
