Circle Buys IBM Blockchain Patents Amidst USDC Revenue Threat from Open USD

Circle acquired nearly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents, solidifying its IP dominance. Yet, the move comes as Open USD, backed by IBM and Visa, directly challenges USDC's core revenue model. This strategic IP play faces immediate competitive headwinds.

Circle just snapped up IBM's core blockchain patent estate: nearly 1,000 patents across 680 families. This instantly positions Circle as the top US blockchain patent holder, a significant IP grab that underpins USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and Arc.

The market reaction was muted. Circle's stock saw only a 2% premarket bump, a stark contrast to the 5-15% surges from prior regulatory wins. Investors are clearly looking past the IP for deeper signals.

The real friction point: IBM, the patent seller, is also a key partner in Open Standard, the consortium behind Open USD. This new stablecoin directly targets Circle's revenue stream by returning most reserve income to distributors and charging zero mint/redeem fees. Visa's new Stablecoin Platform further amplifies this threat, launching with Open USD support.

Analysts are already adjusting. Mizuho slashed Circle's target to $50, citing the Open USD pass-through model. JPMorgan also trimmed numbers on weak Q2 crypto activity. Owning patents may raise the cost for competitors, but it doesn't solve the fundamental challenge to USDC's yield model.

Watch for Q2 results on August 5 for acquisition details and management strategy. The upcoming Coinbase distribution agreement renewal in August is also critical for USDC's reserve income. The question remains: can IP dominance offset a direct assault on the revenue engine?
