Coinbase CPO Exits After Orchestrating 700 Layoffs Amid Leadership Shuffle

Coinbase's Chief People Officer, Lawrence Brock, exits weeks after leading a 700-job reduction. This move follows a significant internal restructuring and other senior departures. The exchange is recalibrating its leadership as it pivots towards an "AI era" and "everything exchange" vision.

Coinbase's Chief People Officer, Lawrence Brock, is out. His departure, effective August 17, comes just weeks after his team orchestrated a 700-job reduction across the exchange. Brock will advise Coinbase until November 30, with Dominique Baillet expected to step into the role.

The May layoffs saw Coinbase reduce its headcount by 14%, from roughly 5,000 to 4,300 employees. This move, costing $50-60 million primarily in severance, was framed as a necessary step to cut expenses and "rebuild for the AI era." The financial impact of these cuts will largely hit Coinbase's Q2 earnings, due July 30.

Brock's history with significant staff reductions isn't new; he also oversaw an 18% workforce reduction in June 2022. His own exit package includes $182,500 for three months of advisory work, with a portion of his stock continuing to vest.

This CPO exit is the fourth senior leadership change at Coinbase since early July. Other recent departures include the Chief Legal Officer, the lead for the Base app, and a co-head of Coinbase Institutional. The exchange is largely promoting internal talent as it pursues its ambitious "everything exchange" strategy, aiming to integrate stocks, derivatives, and regulated prediction markets alongside crypto.
