Equity Perpetual Futures Volume Surges to $665 Billion as CEXs Expand TradFi Offering

Centralized exchanges processed over $665 billion in stock perpetual futures volume in August, representing a 56-fold increase since January. Just three underlying tickers—SanDisk, SK Hynix, and SpaceX—accounted for over half of all trading activity. Major venues like Binance are expanding aggressively into stock options as crypto traders hungry for TradFi exposure drive record leverage into tech assets.

Centralized crypto exchanges processed a staggering $665 billion in stock perpetual futures volume during August, continuing an aggressive shift into traditional financial assets. Trading activity expanded 4.6% month-over-month, representing a massive fifty-six-fold surge compared to January levels as offshore traders chase equity leverage outside traditional market hours.

Heavy concentration dominates the sector, with just three tickers accounting for 50.4% of total trading volume. SanDisk led the charge with $193.5 billion in perpetual turnover, followed by SK Hynix at $75.8 billion and a SpaceX-tracking contract at $65.9 billion. At its peak, SanDisk perpetual trading volume reached 62.4% of its US spot equity turnover, demonstrating how crypto venues are capturing real equity liquidity.

Binance continues to dominate this emerging vertical, recording $433 billion in TradFi perpetual volume for August alone, with equity-linked derivatives accounting for nearly four-fifths of that total. The venue is now preparing to roll out options on over one thousand US stocks and ETFs for international users, setting up a high-stakes battle for offshore retail stock derivatives as competing platforms prepare 24/7 equity options offerings.
