Ethereum Spot ETFs Drain $697M in 9-Day Run as Short Bets Surge to $5B

US spot Ethereum ETFs extended their withdrawal streak to nine consecutive sessions, pulling out nearly $700 million since late September. While institutional capital exits spot products, derivatives traders have stacked $5 billion in short positions against just $1.5 billion in longs. This extreme asymmetry leaves Ether vulnerable to further downside unless a spot reversal triggers a sharp short squeeze.

Wall Street institutional capital is turning away from Ethereum, recording a ninth consecutive day of spot ETF redemptions totaling over fifty-six million dollars on October ninth. The relentless nine-day bleed has erased six hundred ninety-seven million dollars in institutional assets bringing total ETF holdings down to fifteen point seven billion dollars.

The spot drain is paired with aggressive positioning in the derivatives market, where leverage is stacking heavily against Ether. Open interest reveals five billion dollars in short positions pitted against just one point five billion in longs creating a three-to-one skew on the downside.

This dual pressure creates a fragile market structure for traders. Weakening spot accumulation keeps the immediate trend tilted lower, yet the overhead wall of short leverage presents prime liquidity for a squeeze if spot buying suddenly re-emerges.

Until institutional inflows return to flip ETF momentum positive, Ether remains trapped under institutional distribution and derivative pressure, making any sustained recovery reliant on forced short unwinds.
