IBM Quantum Roadmap Accelerates Timeline for 437 Billion Dollars in Vulnerable Bitcoin

IBM expects commercial quantum computing to impact corporate earnings by 2028, putting a strict deadline on Bitcoin security. Roughly 34% of all BTC supply sits in addresses exposed to theoretical quantum decryption. Wall Street heavyweights including BlackRock and Fidelity are stepping in with a $15 million consortium to fund defense protocols.

The quantum timeline just accelerated. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna announced that quantum computing will deliver measurable financial results by 2028 or 2029, projecting a one trillion dollar market by the end of the next decade. IBM and Algorithmiq backed up the claim by demonstrating trusted quantum advantage using 70 logical qubits, proving hardware progress is outrunning legacy crypto security assumptions.

That roadmap creates immediate pressure for Bitcoin. Roughly 34% of circulating supply—6.8 million BTC worth over 437 billion dollars—sits in legacy addresses with exposed public keys. With Google recently cutting the required qubit threshold by twenty-fold, the theoretical window for breaking legacy address security is shrinking fast.

Institutional money is taking notice and funding infrastructure defenses. Galaxy Digital launched a five million dollar initiative, joining BlackRock, Fidelity, and Coinbase in a fifteen million dollar Bitcoin Security Consortium to fast-track upgrades like BIP-360 and BIP-361 before commercial hardware reaches critical scale.
