Macro Yield Surge Drains $600M From Crypto as Cash Inflows Hit Record $166B

A record $166.4 billion flooded into money market funds as US Treasury yields touched multi-decade highs, driving $600 million out of crypto funds in a single week. High risk-free cash yields are sucking liquidity out of risk assets, creating a tough macro hurdle for digital assets. Total money market assets approaching $8 trillion signal that capital will stay sidelined until the Federal Reserve moves to cut interest rates.

A massive capital migration into money market funds just saw $166.4 billion move to cash in a single weekโ€”the largest inflow since April 2020. Rising Treasury yields, with the 10-year reaching 5.36% and 30-year hitting 5.70%, pushed investors out of sovereign bonds and stocks to lock in high risk-free returns.

Crypto felt the immediate squeeze as institutional capital pulled back, recording $600 million in weekly fund outflows while gold absorbed $2 billion. When risk-free government paper offers high returns without market volatility, speculative assets lose their relative appeal and market leverage becomes far more expensive.

With total money market assets swelling toward $8 trillion, the sideline capital pool is massive, but it remains locked until macro policy shifts. Bank of America strategists note that without Federal Reserve rate cuts, this liquidity will stay parked in cash instruments rather than returning to crypto or equities.

In the near term, digital asset upside remains constrained by high opportunity costs and tight dollar liquidity. Traders should monitor Treasury yield stability and central bank interest rate guidance as primary signals for when capital will flow back into risk markets.
