SpaceX Poised to Overtake MicroStrategy as Top Bitcoin Corporate Holder: Grayscale

Grayscale flags SpaceX's impending IPO, projecting it to become the largest public company holding Bitcoin. While MicroStrategy remains the BTC kingpin, SpaceX's diversified revenue streams make its growing BTC allocation a different beast for investors.

SpaceX is gearing up to become the biggest public company with Bitcoin on its books, according to Grayscale Research. With 18,712 BTC worth over $1.4 billion set to be disclosed ahead of its June IPO, the Elon Musk-led firm is making waves. This move positions SpaceX to potentially eclipse current leaders, though its Bitcoin holdings will represent a fraction of its overall valuation, unlike pure-play digital asset treasuries.

Grayscale categorizes corporate Bitcoin holders into two camps. MicroStrategy, a pure-play digital asset treasury (DAT), uses BTC as its primary value driver for investors, boasting a massive 843,738 coin stack. SpaceX, however, falls into the diversified business category, alongside Tesla and Coinbase. Its core operations in rockets and Starlink generate independent revenue, making its Bitcoin holdings a strategic hedge rather than the main event.

This distinction is crucial for market analysis. A diversified company with a modest Bitcoin allocation presents a different risk profile than a company whose stock essentially trades as a leveraged Bitcoin proxy. Grayscale anticipates more diversified businesses will follow suit, allocating Bitcoin for portfolio diversification against fiat currency risks.

While MicroStrategy will still hold vastly more Bitcoin in absolute terms, SpaceX's entry signals a broader trend of corporate adoption. Over 100 public firms now hold around 1.24 million BTC, over 5% of the total supply. SpaceX's upcoming Nasdaq debut on June 12 offers traders an early opportunity to position themselves before the official listing.
